Meet Dr. Julie Waters
What clients and issues do you work with?
What is your training and background?
I have been a licensed practicing psychologist for 22 years and, like all psychologists, accrued clinical experience prior to and as a condition of licensure. I completed my Clinical Psychology Residency at the Univ. of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, completed my doctorate (Psy.D.) in Counseling Psychology at the University of San Francisco, completed a one-year post masters certification in career counseling at John F. Kennedy University, and completed a masters at Trinity University.
I trained in a variety of settings: Southwest Neuropsychiatric Institute of Texas; the Psychological Corporation; San Antonio State Hospital; San Francisco State University Counseling Center; the Child Guidance Center of San Antonio, and the UTHSC Department of Psychiatry Adult Outpatient Psychotherapy Services.
As part of my training and then after, I worked as a clinician at the University of Texas at San Antonio Counseling Center. After training, I continued to be a clinician there, then became a training director, and finally an Assistant Director and Clinic Coordinator before deciding to leave for private practice. I love being in private practice and have felt fortunate in the clients I have been able to work with during my 20 years in private practice. In addition to private practice, I have also taught graduate-level internship courses in the University of Texas Counseling program, have consulted with university organizations regarding psycho educational programming, have presented on psychoeducational topics in various settings, have served on the board of the Bexar County Psychological Association, have served for four years on a PTA Executive Board, have been part of the NEISD Focus Group on Bullying, and currently serve on the Board of San Antonio Society for Psychoanalytic Studies.
Do you accept Insurance?
I am not in-network for any insurance. Most of my clients are fee-for-service but approximately 5% file for reimbursement using the out of network provision of their health insurance. These clients do the ‘legwork’ on filing but I provide a statement for them to submit to their insurance company. Couples Therapy is typically not covered by insurance companies. I believe that working in this way allows me to avoid spending countless hours doggedly pursuing seemingly obstructionist insurance companies and to concentrate, instead, on spending that time on providing a personal, high quality, highly confidential service to my clients. I love my work and enjoy the opportunity to be very thoughtful and thorough on behalf of my clients.
